Are Your Photography Clients Getting the Sales Tax Scaries?
As a photographer, you get the special legal privilege of having to charge sales tax on your ENTIRE service package if you are also including a physical product with your package.
Of course, this varies state-by-state. But if you are in one of the states in which this is applicable, you can understand why your clients might get the sales tax scaries when their balance unexpectedly jumps up.
(AND IF YOU’RE REALLY, REALLY LUCKY AND LIVE IN A STATE THAT REQUIRE SALES TAX EVEN ON DIGITAL IMAGES, THEN THIS WILL BE A STAPLE IN YOUR CLIENT COMMUNICATIONS TOOLBOX.)
Luckily for you, I put together an AMAZINGLY HELPFUL and free "explain sales tax to your client" email template for you to use when facing this sometimes tricky situation. I know many photographers out there have had to navigate the nuances of sales tax, and this email template will help you simply explain the purpose for the extra charge when clients question… “why the tax??”.
Make sure to save this one to your Gmail pre-saved templates! Especially as more and more states are hopping on board with wanting to collect sales tax on digital products. It’s always good to be prepared. ;)
